“Theodore Roosevelt said, ‘People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.’ Those are words I live by.”

~ Dr. Albini

Most doctors are terrible listeners, says Dr. S. Mark Albini, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Saint Mary’s Hospital. A good physician takes the time to build trust with patients, put them at ease and then be truly tuned in when they say what’s on their mind.

“You can’t listen with your hand on the knob of the door,” says Dr. Albini, whose medical credentials are extensive and impeccable, just like his focus at Naugatuck Valley Women’s Health Specialists—offering an increasingly rare depth of compassionate engagement with patients.

When patients are in need, which has sometimes meant after-hours texts or phone calls, he’s always there to respond. “It’s not just being available all the time, it’s genuine caring,” says Dr. Albini.

That’s the philosophy for all the physicians and staff at NVWHS, which has office hours early, late and on Saturday. “The physicians here treat their patients like family members,” says Dr. Albini, whose high level of engagement with patients is counterbalanced by professional appointments placing him in the top tier of OB/GYN physicians in Connecticut.

For example, Dr. Albini is Medical Director of Saint Mary’s Hospital’s ACO, the Valley Health Alliance Accountable Care Organization, an innovative initiative designed to improve the care patients receive in the health care system and lower costs.

Dr. Albini has had numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, and his research has been presented nationally and internationally.
